19 October 2016: Members Update

Most of you will have noticed that we had a large turnout for our Saturday event at Bramshill last weekend but our team of volunteers, led by Jane Courtier, generally coped well.  The weather was good (unlike Sunday) which helped but the areas of young trees made the going on Andy Parry’s courses tough in places and quite a challenge.  Katy Stubbs’ map of our new area was impressive including detailed mapping of the numerous ridges.  Also a quick mention of St Andrew’s School as their girls were the Prep/Middle champions at the recent British Schools Score Championships with their boys being just pushed into second place – more details in the next Newsletter I hope!

BKO Events

Saturday 29th / Sunday 30th October – Greenham Common Events

As members will have seen from recent e-mails requesting help, we have two events coming up which we are jointly organising with the Basingstoke club, BADO.

On Saturday evening there is a night event with starts from 18.30 to 19.30.  For details of this event, see: Greenham Common Night Event. This is followed on Sunday by a regional league event.  The League is now branded as the SCOL making this SCOL2 of the 2016-17 season.  This has the complete range of courses from Brown down to White. For this event, see: SCOL2 - Greenham Common

For both events, standard entries now close this Saturday (22nd October at midnight) and late entries close midnight next Tuesday, 25th October.  There is a £2 discount to Seniors entering both night and Sunday events online.  Also don’t forget that helpers will be given a discount code to use when entering – offers to Fiona at: ladybiker729@aol.com.

Other Clubs’ Events

Saturday 22nd October

This weekend there are two Level D Saturday events staged by adjoining clubs. To the north is TVOC’s event at Kings Wood, High Wycombe – see TVOC Kings Wood. To the West is NWO’s event at Hens Wood, near Marlborough – see NWO Hens Wood.  Both events are entry on the day.

Saturday 5th November – SARUM - Salisbury City Urban Race

As well as being part of the Southern England Urban O League, this is part of a weekend of orienteering – see next item.  A new area of Salisbury has been recently mapped and will be used for this race. Preferred pre-entry on Fabian 4 by Saturday 29th. October.  There will be limited entry on the day while maps last.  For details see: Salisbury City Urban Race

Sunday 6th November – November Classic, New Forest

The November Classic this year is hosting one of the national regional championships – the 2016 Southern Championships – and will attract a large field of competitors.  This year’s event is making use of the New Forest around Fritham and is based at the Ocknell camp site.  Entries preferred on Fabian4 with a closing date midnight Sunday 30 October.  Note that you must pre-enter to compete on one of the Championship courses with EOD for White, Yellow and Orange classes only.  For details see: November Classic.

Regional Matters

Here are details of two matters raised at the recent regional committee meeting:

  • British Orienteering needs to recruit more tutors and assessors for coaching courses and needs candidates who have either teaching qualifications or that are NVQ assessors. We have been asked to circulate this to club members for ex-teachers or NVQ assessors who perhaps do not want to be coaches but may be able to take on the role of tutor/assessors for the coaching courses
  • There is a Level 2 UK certificate in coaching course being run between 8th and 10th November 2016 at Longmoor.  It costs £420 per person and may be open to non-military depending on how many people are on the course.  A contribution from the club towards the cost may be forthcoming.

For both of these items, please contact Fiona initially
