24 September: BKO Update

Last weekend saw several club members at an event near Ringwood in the New Forest.  Attending the event as BKO members was a large contingent of juniors tackling the Orange, Yellow and White courses.  These juniors were from St Andrew’s School, Pangbourne, back for a new term but also getting some practice in before the British Schools Score Championships being held on Chobham Common on the 10th October.  Good luck to the School as it defends it’s winning results in the ‘Middle Girls’ and ‘Middle Boys’ section last year.

Sunday 11th October – South East Club Score Champs – Long Valley North

Although this is a ‘South East’ Championships, anyone can actually enter and have a go but only club members from SEOA clubs actually participate in the Championships.  Long Valley is to the west of Aldershot so quite close for many Berkshire Orienteers members.  At score events competitors have to visit as many controls as they can in the set time (either 40 or 60 minutes in this case) before returning to the finish.  Penalties apply if you are late back – so take a watch!  Pre-entries by 4th October with limited entry on the day.  See: http://www.southernnavigators.com/ for details

Regional SCOA Junior Squad

The Junior Squad is responsible for the training of junior orienteers within the region to achieve a high standard both personally and when running for the region.  It is always on the lookout for new members - perhaps it could be you or your children! You don't have to be that experienced to join the squad and the squad will help you to become a better orienteer.

Laurence Townley (SN) and Simon Kippin (TVOC) now manage the Junior Squad. The squad has 27 athletes, with six new members having joined since June. However the squad managers would welcome further juniors to boost numbers in the squad.

Training sessions are planned for the final weekend of October and of November, with a further session planned for February. The squad is keen for coaches to support training and would welcome any coach offering to plan and organise a future session.

If you know a junior who can manage an Orange course on their own, and are keen to improve, then please contact Simon or Laurence at juniorsquad@scoa-orienteering.org.uk
