14 March: BKO Update

As many of you will already know, a large contingent of BKO members, bravely attempted to take on a group of larger clubs in a heat of the CompassSport Cup on Sunday.  Martin Wilson, our Club Captain, had assembled the team and encouraged us all to give of our best.  But, despite taking the lead early on, the other clubs overcame us.  We have made progress and Martin is to be thanked for his hard work and leadership.   There are some photos of some club members at the final control on the Flickr site – see: CompassSport Cup Photos.

BKO Summer Evening Training starts Wednesday 20th April

Co-ordinated by Mark Foxwell, Summer evening training provides a mixture of technical forest training and urban events from April to July.  They are a great way to practice and improve your skills as well as meet up with other club members.

Training starts are usually from 6.30 to 7.00 to finish by 8.00 in the evening; but may be earlier for those trainings early in the series (to allow the organiser to finish at  a reasonable time and in daylight). There are no charges for BKO organised training, but Southern Navigators may make a small charge for training they organise.

As in previous years we are sharing some events with Southern Navigators.  The schedule is given below. In each case, Mark has also indicated the proposed training on offer.  Please note that the schedule is provisional and you should check the website nearer to the day and before travelling for any changes.

    • 20 April, Windmill Hill, Deepcut (SN)
    • 27 April, Swinley East (with SN),  (Pathless courses)
    • 4 May,  Horsell Common, Woking (SN)
    • 11 May, Swinley West (with SN) (Score event )
    • 18 May, Camberley  urban  (SN)
    • 25 May, Great Hollands, Bracknell urban (with SN) (Score)
    • 1 June, Simons Wood, Crowthorne  (Map memory)
    • 8 June, Bloom Wood , Marlow (Window)
    • 15 June, Pirbright  Urban (SN)
    • 22 June, Birch Hill, Bracknell urban (with SN) (Urban or sprint loops)
    • 29 June, Wildridings and Easthamptead, Bracknell (Urban)
    • 6 July, Lily Hill Park, Bracknell  (line event or relay)

The events also can provide organising and planning opportunities! Although there is not as much to do as for a Saturday morning event, help is needed and is a good opportunity to organise or plan in an informal setting.  Please let Mark know if you are interested in planning or organizing one of the BKO sessions.

British Orienteering Championships

This is taking place on Brown Clee Hill, Shropshire, on Saturday 30th April.  The cheapest entry rate ends this coming Sunday – 21st March – so if you are certain to be going, get your entry in this week to save some money.  Club Captain Martin Wilson will soon be seeking members to join a relay team the next day at the same location – members should watch out for his e-mail.
