28 April 2016: BKO Update

We have 25 members entered for the British Championships (the ‘Long Distance’ version) taking place this coming Saturday.  This will be followed on Sunday by the British Relay Championships in which we have 5 teams entered including one for the Men’s Premier class – good luck to Alex Moore, John Methven and Mark Saunders who are taking on this challenge.  This is all happening on Brown Clee Hill in Shropshire.  Current forecast is for ‘sunny intervals’ although the organisers say they have made provision for the possibility of snow in the car park field!  Good luck everyone.

BKO Events

Sunday 22nd May - SCOA League Event – Bloom Wood

This is the first alert for our next significant event – our regular spring regional SCOA League Event.  This year it is being staged in Bloom Wood between Marlow and the M40.  Details can be seen on the website at Bloom Wood Event  The main reason for alerting you now is that the organiser, Colin Godbold, is hoping to have a good number of volunteers to help stage the event.  Please send him an email to events@bko.org.uk in the first instance, indicating any preferences on role or timing.  There will be a ‘helper’s discount’ for those who volunteer – details from Colin.

Other Clubs Events

Sunday 8th May – BADO Middle Distance Event

This is being staged on an area new to orienteering: Pen Wood, to the south of Newbury.  The planning is by the regional SCOA Junior Squad and profits from the event will support their activities.  For details, see: BADO Middle Distance Event.   Note that this has now been updated with details of courses.

Training Opportunities

The staging of orienteering events needs a number of officials who can perform important tasks.  In fact, from next year, it is expected that organisers and planners will all have attended an event safety training course so please watch out for details.  Here are two other opportunities that might be of interest to BKO members:

Friday 13 May/Saturday 14 May - OCAD Course - Army Orienteering

The Army Orienteering club (BAOC) regularly organises training sessions covering a range of skills.  Although targeted at service personnel, most courses are open to civilians as well.  This particular course is on the use of OCAD for the production of orienteering maps and is taking place at Longmoor Camp which is on the A3 between Liss and Liphook. If interested, e-mail coaching@armyorienteering.com for more details.

Tuesday 16 August 2016 - Outdoor First Aid course v2 - Bristol Orienteering Klub

This is taking place in Bristol (Avon Riding Centre, Kings Weston Road, Bristol, BS10 7QT) with easy access from M4 Junctions 17 and 18.  Timing is 9.00 to 17.00.  Members will have received details as an attachment. Additional details can be seen on the Bristol OK website: BOK First Aid Course
