16 April: BKO Update

19 club members are going west to the Forest of Dean this weekend for the British Championships on Saturday.  This will be followed with the British Relay Championships on an adjacent area on Sunday.  The club has three teams entered for this second event.  The weather is looking good – a bit chilly but dry with a good amount of sunshine. Good luck to them all.

BKO Events

Saturday 2nd May – Summer Urban Park Challenge

The first of our short series of 4 Summer Urban Park Challenge events is based at Sandhurst Memorial Park.  This event will be based within the park itself while the other 3 events combine parkland with urban navigation.  Registration will be from 10:00am - 11:00am with starts from 10:30am - 11:30am.  Details at: http://www.bko.org.uk/event/sandhurst-memorial-park-2-may-15

Saturday 30th May – National Nopesport League Urban Event

We are staging a major urban event at Great Hollands, Bracknell, on the 30th May.  A great chance to compete against some of the best urban orienteers in the country on our own terrain.  We will be needing helpers and details will follow shortly.  Look for further details on our website at: http://www.bko.org.uk/event/great-hollands-30-may-15

Summer Training - Wednesday Evenings

We are staging a series of informal training events on a series of Wednesday evenings starting on the 29th April.  The series will run most (but not all) Wednesdays from 29th April until the 24th June.  Some are staged in conjunction with Southern Navigators and we are invited to attend some of theirs.  The first 3 evenings are 29 April (Wildridings, urban), 13 May (Swinley West, line event) and 20 May (Lily Hill Park, map memory).  More details will be available soon.

Other Club’s Events

Two national Championship events on one weekend and both within less than an hour from nearly all our members!  Entries for both events are open but you MUST pre-enter before midnight on Sunday 26th April.  There will be NO entry after that date, nor will there be on the day entry.

Saturday 9th May - British Sprint Championships - Aldershot Barracks

This competition will be held within the newly built Aldershot Garrison complex of barracks, which are located north and south of the Basingstoke Canal.  The event comprises two races - the first race determines the start order for the second which takes place about 2 hours after the first.  For details see: http://www.britishsprintchamps.org.uk/page/home

Sunday 10th May - British Middle Championships - Naphill and Park Wood High Wycombe

‘Middle’ races consist of shorter courses than usual but with many short legs and frequent changes of direction. It requires intense concentration to do well. Park Wood, used by all courses, is typical managed Chilterns beechwood with many pits, depressions, earthbanks and vegetation changes. Runnability is generally good although there are small areas of slower going underfoot. A central valley will test the legs and lungs.  The Far Start uses Naphill Common which is a mostly flat, very runnable area with many pits and depressions, plus some thick vegetation interspersed with a plethora of paths.
